Safeguarding

Our commitment

Many of the students we teach are under 18. Their safety and wellbeing come first, and we expect everyone involved in Upgrade Economics to behave in a way that protects them. Our designated safeguarding lead is Liam Day, who can be contacted at liam@upgradeeconomics.co.uk.

How we communicate with students

For students under 18, all communication about face-to-face sessions is with their parent or guardian. We start direct contact with students only to arrange session timings, and only with their parent or guardian's consent.

If a student contacts us first, we will answer their questions about their learning, but we will not arrange live sessions without involving their parent or guardian.

All communication with students is about their learning. We do not connect with students on personal social media accounts, and we do not arrange to meet students outside agreed tutoring sessions.

Tutoring sessions

Face-to-face sessions are arranged with the consent of the student's parent or guardian. For students under 18, online one-to-one sessions are held on Microsoft Teams and are organised with their parent or guardian.

We do not record live sessions, including one-to-one tutoring and our Monday Q&A sessions.

Online safety in the classroom

We ask members not to share personal information, and not to copy, record or share other members' details. Members under 18 should never share their address, school or phone number in a live session.

If you have a concern

If you are worried about a student, or about anything that happens in our sessions or messages, please contact Liam at liam@upgradeeconomics.co.uk. If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

Concerns can also be raised with the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000, and children can speak to Childline on 0800 1111. We will take every concern seriously, and where necessary we will share information with the appropriate authorities, such as the local council's children's services or the police.

Our checks

Liam holds a standard DBS certificate obtained for tutoring.
